An MCP config generator writes the JSON file that connects an AI app to Model Context Protocol servers. MCP is an open standard that lets assistants such as Claude, Cursor and VS Code Copilot use external tools and data, for example your files, a database, GitHub or a browser, through small programs called MCP servers.
Each app reads its servers from a config file, and the files differ just enough to cause mistakes: Claude Desktop, Claude Code and Cursor use an mcpServers object while VS Code uses servers, and remote servers are declared differently in each. This generator produces the right structure for the app you choose and tells you where the file goes.
How to use the MCP Config Generator
- Choose the app you are configuring: Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor or VS Code.
- Add a server from a preset, or enter its name and either a command with arguments or a remote URL.
- Add any environment variables or headers the server needs, such as an API token.
- Copy or download the generated JSON and save it at the file location shown for your app.
Frequently asked questions
What is an MCP config file?
It is a JSON file that tells an AI app which Model Context Protocol servers to connect to. Each entry has a name and either a command to launch a local server or a URL for a remote one, plus optional environment variables or headers.
Where is claude_desktop_config.json located?
On macOS it is at ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json and on Windows at %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json. You can open it from Claude Desktop under Settings, Developer, Edit Config. Restart the app after saving.
What is the difference between stdio and HTTP MCP servers?
A stdio server is a program that runs on your own machine and talks to the app through standard input and output, so the config holds a command and arguments. An HTTP server runs remotely and the config holds its URL. SSE is an older remote transport that some servers still use.
Why is my MCP server not showing up?
The most common causes are invalid JSON such as a trailing comma, the wrong top-level key (VS Code uses servers, the others use mcpServers), a command that is not installed or not on your PATH, and forgetting to restart the app after editing the file.
Is it safe to put API keys in an MCP config?
The file is stored as plain text, so treat it like a password file. Do not commit a config containing real tokens to version control. For a project file that is shared with a team, reference an environment variable instead of pasting the secret.
How do I add an MCP server to Claude Code?
Either save a .mcp.json file in the project root, or run a claude mcp add command in your terminal. This tool generates both, so you can use whichever you prefer.
